Google muscles in on the book market in Australia

Google’s new e-book store is taking off around the world and has now arrived on Australian shores. To make their entry into the Australian market, Google are partnering with Australia book giants Dymocks and online bookshop Booktopia to offer Google’s virtual books. Google have also partnered with a couple of other stores such as The Co-op bookshop and QBD The Bookshop.

Australia is the fourth store to go live around the world with the US, UK and Canada launching first.

The purpose of Google’s online bookstore is to allow consumers to buy electronic copies of books to read on electronic devices. Google’s e-books product manager in Australia, Mark Tanner, has indicated that hundreds of publishers in Australia have signed up to the new e-Book store.

Lenovo and Blackberry to do a deal?

The rumour mill is in full swing with whispers that Lenovo may be purchasing the once giant smartphone company,  Blackberry. Lenovo CEO, Yang Yuanqing let the cat out of the bag by saying that the company may consider a purchase of Blackberry at some point in the future. The Lenovo CEO was talking to French financial newspaper Les Echos.

Yang went on to say that he would need to first understand what the market was doing and whether the purchase would make sense for Lenovo. These comments follow on from similar comments that were made by Lenovo CFO Wong Wai Ming. He told Bloomberg that Lenovo was investigate many opportunities include the a possible acquisition of BlackBerry.

Not surprisingly, on this news the company’s shares rocketed by 14 percent to have it’s biggest gain since February 4th. Overall, the company’s share price has risen 26 percent this year.

Dell to be bought by Dell?

The Great Barrier Reef

How contact lenses are made

Black Soot.. worse than first thought

An international study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres that has been four years in the making has identified that the effects of black soot, which is produced by burning fossil fuels and biomass, has a bigger effect on the atmosphere than first thought.

The black soot is often produced by many processes such as diesel engines, cooking stoves and brick kilns.  The most powerful pollutant to the atmosphere is carbon dioxide, however black soot is now considered to be a very close second.

Unlike carbon dioxide, black soot sits in the atmosphere for a mere number of days versus carbon dioxide which can linger in the atmosphere for centuries. This key factor though could prove crucial in reducing global warming as reducing the amount of soot should change the climate significantly for the better.

Black carbon emissions are thought to cause significantly more warming in some critical parts of the world such as the Artic and the surrounding areas.
